Cigars for women, “Living as a woman in a man’s world”

What it is:

Smoking cigars is a growing trend for women in the U.S. Ofcourse there always have been women who smoked cigars, but it has been seen as a manly status symbol by our society. Back in the 80’s Cigar Aficionado reported that at that time only 0.10% of the whole cigar market was represented by women. Today about 2% of the U.S. women say they smoke cigars, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This 2% means that about 3.2 million U.S. women are smoking cigars. Since this increasing number of women who smoke cigars, cigar brands have added a lot of ‘female friendly cigars’ to their original assortment with flavours like vanille, cherry, honey and chocolat.
As said before, smoking cigars is often seen as a status symbol used by powerful and mostly rich people. This also means powerful and famous women like Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore, Claudia Schiffer and Heidi Klum have been known for smoking cigars. These days more and more women are smoking cigars as a marketing strategy in the businessworld, they want to create a powerful look with the cigar. Lowder, a 33 year old women from Cumberland, U.S. said a women smoking a cigar is ’empowering’, with the quote “Living as a woman in a man’s world”.

Why it is cool:

To be honest this trend isn’t that cool to me. Ofcourse it is great to see that men and women are getting more equal. But what isn’t that great is that women apparantly have to smoke cigars to get equal and create that empowering look. these ‘female friendly cigars’ with the added flavours may seem less harmful, but a cigar (original or flavoured) is still harmful to the body. Just like smoking cigarettes it can cause cancer and heart disease. I think it’s not worth the risk to harm yourself so bad for an additional market strategy.

Why it has future growth potention:

Even though smoking brings high risks with it, it seem to work out for these women and their business. Since money rules the world, and this group of business women are often willing to give almost everything for their business, I think this trend has the potention to grow further in te near future. I also think this trend may have the potention to reach the ‘normal women’ who want to have the powerful women and rich look.
