What it is:
From teenage girls to grandmothers, more and more women are arming themselves. They do this to protect themselves better, but also because most of the women enjoy the shooting action and having the ability to protect themselves.
Women owning a firearm: According to Gallup data poll, the percentage of armed women in the U.S. almost dubbled between 2005 and 2011. in 2005 only 13% of the U.S. women owned a firearm, and in 2011 the percentage was already 23%.
Target shooting: Although women represent only 22% of the whole target shooting population, The National Shooting Sports Faundation reported in August 2013 that 37% of new target shooters are female.
Why it is cool:
At first I’d like to say that I think it’s great that women can protect themselves and having ability to do so. But there’s a little gap between the U.S. law and the law we have in The Netherlands. As a Dutch citizen you’re not allowed to own a firearm. Well, only with a license, meant strictly for target shooting and hunting.
According to the percentages you can tell that target shooting has been a “mens sport” for a long time, and it’s cool that also women are getting into this sport right now. It also is cool that women are getting more ability to protect themselves, but if that ability means shooting someone for protection, I’m not sure if that’s cool to me. But that’s just my personal opinion.
Why this has future growth potention:
This has future growth potention because women seem to enjoy the shooting and the ability to protect themselves. Crime will probaby never be over and if women feel more safe with a firearm, they won’t leave it once they felt safe with it. that’s why I think this is trend will grow further at the moment and in the future.
